What Travelers Should Know Before Booking a Taxi Phnom Penh - Siem Reap – Tips & Important Info

When planning your taxi from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, the best departure time depends on your preferences for weather, traffic, and comfort:

  • Before 7:00 AM
Minimal traffic and cooler temperatures. Ideal for an early arrival in Siem Reap — but you may miss hotel breakfast if it’s not served early.

  • Between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM
A good balance: still relatively cool, and you’ll have time to enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Expect moderate city traffic.

  • Between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM
The hottest part of the day, but traffic is usually lighter once you’re out of Phnom Penh center. This is a good window if you’re not in a rush and want a relaxed pace.

  • After 4:00 PM
Expect city traffic and later arrival in Siem Reap (after sunset). It’s still hot during early evening. Suitable if you’re staying multiple nights and don’t need to start touring on the same day.

If you plan to visit Angkor Wat on the same day you arrive, make sure to leave Phnom Penh no later than 6:00 AM. The journey takes 5–6 hours, allowing just enough time for a lunch break and a short temple visit in the afternoon.

However, if your schedule allows, we recommend planning your Angkor temple tour for the next morning instead:

  • You’ll be rested and fresh after the road trip.

  • You can start early to catch the sunrise or cooler hours.

  • The entrance ticket is valid for a full day, so you’ll get maximum value.

  • Instead of rushing, you can enjoy the roadside scenery or sightseeing stops during the drive.

The Angkor Ticket Center is open daily from 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
If you’re planning a sunrise visit, we recommend buying your ticket the evening before, so you can head directly to the temples in the morning without any delay.

Between December 24 and January 10, and during Cambodian public holidays, taxi demand is especially high.

  • At the start of public holidays, many locals travel to Siem Reap for celebrations.
  • At the end of the holidays, most travelers return to Phnom Penh — leading to high demand in the opposite direction.

To secure your preferred vehicle and departure time, make sure to book early.

FAQ

Can I visit Angkor Temples in Siem Reap and return to Phnom Penh in one day?

Yes, it’s technically possible — but it will be a very long and exhausting day. To make it work, you’ll need to leave Phnom Penh by 3:00 AM, arriving in Siem Reap around 8:30 AM, with time for a quick breakfast before starting your temple tour.

To truly appreciate Angkor Wat and nearby temples, you’ll need at least 6 hours, though ideally 8. After your visit, you’d need to depart Siem Reap around 5:00 PM to reach Phnom Penh by late evening.

For travelers with limited time, this option allows for a fast temple experience — but it’s not recommended unless absolutely necessary. An overnight stay in Siem Reap is strongly advised for a more comfortable and rewarding visit.

What landmarks can I see or visit on the way from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap?

There are several interesting stops and local attractions along the route from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Here are some of the most popular:

  • Skun Spider Market – A quirky and famous roadside market where locals sell fried tarantulas, crickets, and other exotic snacks. A quick photo stop or curiosity break.

  • Spean Praptos (Kampong Kdei Bridge) – A remarkable 12th-century Angkorian laterite bridge — one of the oldest and longest of its kind in Southeast Asia. Ideal for a short cultural stop and photos.

  • Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk – A pre-Angkorian temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Requires a detour, but offers a quiet and authentic temple experience without the crowds.

  • Oudong (if taking a slight detour early in the trip) – The former royal capital of Cambodia, with beautiful stupas on a hill offering panoramic views.

  • Floating Villages (Kampong Phluk or Kampong Khleang) – Located closer to Siem Reap, these can be added for travelers with more time and interest in local river life.

Booked this service from phnom penh to siem reap. Driver was punctual and lovely. The SUV was comfortable and the 6 hour ride went smoothly. We stopped for lunch half way through the journey, a floating restaurant serving the usual local fare with clean toilets.Glad we booked with Mango taxi. Two thumbs up.

Great Van service in Vietnam and Cambodia.
We used Mango Taxi to transport us via van from Ha Tien in Vietnam to Phnom Penh in Cambodia, assisting with border crossing etc. Mango also drove us from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Their vans were comfortable and nice, and the drivers were great. The trips were all smooth and seamless. Booking was very easy too. I give them two thumbs up and will use them again.

Phnom Penh to Siem Reap
Our English speaking driver, Mr Spider, was ready and waiting for us at the appointed hour to drive us from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. (6 1/2 hours including stop). A lovely gentle man who explained the principles of Budism to us in an uncomplicated and interesting way. The drive was during the day and so we saw plenty of rice fields and houses on stilts + water buffalo. We felt safe at all times as his driving was safe and smooth. Not sure if what we paid ($130) was over the top or not but the Khmer people need all the tourist help they can get.

Best Service!
Our itinerary involved entering Cambodia via Phnom Penh International Airport and going directly to Siem Reap. I considered booking transfer services via Klook (did not push through because the vehicles looked old), or via bus companies (our arrival time made it impossible) but I was so glad that I ended up booking via Mango Taxi. I booked via their website for an SUV that will pick us up from Phnom Penh Airport and drop us off at our hotel in Siem Reap. From my booking, Stephanie contacted me via Whatsapp to confirm our flight schedules and our pick up time because instead of 11:55pm which was our flight arrival time, I set 1am as pick up time because I considered immigration processing and baggage claim. Stephanie has updated our pick up time to 11:55 as per our discussion. When we arrived in Phnom Penh, our driver was already there at the arrival area, and he immediately took us to the parking area where we saw that our service vehicle was a Toyota Alphard. We are a group of four friends and we were very comfortable during our travel as the vehicle was very nice, clean and had so much leg room. We had a good sleep as well. We stopped mid way at a gas station and some of us went to the restroom. Our driver has advised us to take our time in our stop. Anyway, we made our way from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap within a little over four hours, as we were already at the hotel before 5am instead of our expected arrival time of 6-7am. Overall, the service was excellent and will book this again if we ever go back to Cambodia.

Two nice trips
We used Mango Taxi twice during our trip. First for airport pick up and second, for Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. For the airport pick up, we had some trouble finding our driver. I ended up calling him and my friend who speaks some Khmer was able to help connect us. I provided incorrect flight information so that probably made it more difficult. I would recommend getting an English speaking driver in case you can’t find each other. For the transport from Phnom Pehn to Siem Reap, the trip was perfect. We got an upgrade to a business class van, and it exceeded my expectations. The two back seats could recline, massage, and had foot rests. It was very luxurious. Our driver was wonderful as well. We stopped once for rest rooms and snacks, and he gave us the option for a lunch stop which we declined. I would definitely use Mango Taxi again.

Excellent minivan service between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
Great service! We used Mango to take our family of four by minivan from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and back, and had a really good experience. They were very responsive when I first inquired, the price was much better than other companies we looked at, they were very accommodating when we had some last-minute changes and requests, and they stayed in touch to make sure we were well taken care of. The two drivers we used were very safe, friendly, and accommodating. It’s a long drive between the two cities, but we think it’s still less hassle to drive it than to take a domestic flight, especially with Mango which was reliable, helpful, and flexible with the transportation arrangements. Would definitely use Mango again, and will recommend them to everyone.

Safe driving, clean cars, on time, easy communication. I recommend
I used twice the services of Mango Taxi this month (Phnom Penh to Kep and then Phnom Penh to Siem Reap) and I have been pleased with them.Booking via the online form is easy, tracking of the booking is done by email, communication is then via Whatsapp. It's super easy and smooth. Both cars (SUV) I got into where clean and of good standard. The drivers were helpful, spoke good English, on time, and were safe drivers. I can only recommend Mango Asia.As a comparison, I found another driver to do Kep to Phnom Penh. It was a little less expensive BUT the windshield was cracked and on a couple of occasions, I thought the driving was not safe. While Cambodian roads are not per say that dangerous, they can be a little exotic here and there so safe driving is worth a few extra bucks. If I had to do it again, I would book with Mango Asia for that trip too.

Phnom Penh to Siem Reap
We had a wonderful English speaking driver. He was so helpful and patient with us. Our driver was informative about the countries history and allowed us to make stops at some historical temples. I appreciate how he was not on his phone while driving and engaged in conversation with us. The vehicle was an older Lexus SUV, but very clean and safe. Overall, a great experience and very nice driver.

Travel from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap
Travel time was 7 hours with 2 washroom breaks and 1 lunch break Cost is 100 USD for one way, which is the best rate in the market. (Verified by checking with multiple operators and individual taxi drivers) Friendly English speaking driver who was chatty and gave us a lot of information about his culture and Cambodia. He introduced us to shops serving fresh sea coconuts and sea coconut drink. Driving skills were great and he was very attentive and patient on the road. Most of the highway length is a single road stretch with 2 way traffic, so it can be tricky. On my way to book their taxi service again to return back to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap now!!

Friendly drivers and great service!
We booked with Stefan at Mango taxi’s and the service was excellent from start to finish. I changed the booking several times and with ease. Stefan was always available on WhatsApp or via email. Our first journey was Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, the driver was on time, smiley, asked us several times if we wanted to stop over for food, drinks and the bathroom. He even brought us some sticky rice in a bamboo shoot which was a first for us both and very delicious. The drive took 5.5hours, car was well maintained and the driver drove well and at a safe and good speed throughout. Our second journey was from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. Once again excellent service, friendly and smiley driver who was very helpful throughout. Car very well maintained and clean.Overall a great experience and if we were in Cambodia again we would choose Mango Taxi’s.

I really enjoyed my rides with Mango Taxi. I went from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and then back again. Both drivers were really friendly, punctual, and easy to communicate with. Very accommodating; happy to stop for toilet breaks and to get food since the drive was so long. Both cars were really comfortable and I felt safe travelling as a solo female.

Smooth, safe and excellent alternative to flying
Smooth and safe best summarizes our trip today from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. What was originally an inevitable road trip after all flights to Siem Reap were cancelled ended up being a more relaxing alternative than flying. We estimate it adds maximum 1 hour if travel time in comparison with flying. That is, on non-holiday normal traffic days.

Smooth Transport from Siem Reap
Our ride from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap on Tuesday, February 11th, went very well. We departed from our hotel on time. Water was provided for all. We appreciated the rest stops before and after lunch. Especially the afternoon break at the “old bridge” close to Siem Reap. And our driver, Mr. Ching, put safety first first, and was courteous and polite.

Convenient, professional, excellent communication
We were excited to try Mango Taxi from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Mango Taxi was responsive with email, confirmed right away, and provided a great driver who was punctual and obviously comfortable navigating the Cambodian highways. We had the option to stop for toilets if needed, and our ride was smooth while allowing us to see the countryside. Door-to-door drop-off to/from our hotels. Easy to pay in cash - don’t forget to bring extra $ to tip your driver! We will book with them again next trip.
